The review from Patton Oswalt on the back of Life with Mr. Dangerous by Paul Hornschemeier says “Cringe and cringe some more-Life with Mr. Dangerous Has it all. Also, you will cringe.” I couldn’t have said it better myself although I don’t see this as a positive review of Mr. Hornschemeier’s work.
I read Mr. Hornschemeier’s graphic novel today and it made me hate everything I love about comics; the dark, neurotic, hopeless characters…panels pattering about into nothingness…
My distaste for the book I cannot nail down. I simply know I’d rather pick up an Adrian Tomine book next time I’m craving a glimpse into the dark and lonely life of a stranger.
Was it Hornschemeier’s tone? It all seemed too detached. The love story was also supremely corny. I would slit my wrists if a man ever wrote me long letters with $10 words describing “our” favorite tv show. I would rather fuck the ice cream man (referencing the story here…you’ll have to take my word on it).
